What is Customizable Keycaps (AEKI)?

Customizable Keycaps is a free MakerWorld customizer by the designer AEKI that builds a set of up to nine keycaps for Cherry MX style switches, each with one letter, emoji or symbol on top in a second color. It runs in MakerWorld's Parametric Model Maker, so there is no code to edit.

You type the characters, one per key, and pick a font that supports them: Noto Emoji for emoji, Noto Sans for text, Noto Sans TC for Chinese characters, two Noto symbol sets, or Yarndings 12, a dingbat font that turns letters into symbols. Then you set the text size, the keycap and character colors, how many keys you want and the keycap height, and press Generate. If a character shows up as a rectangle, the font you chose does not cover it.

It suits anyone who wants a few novelty keys for a mechanical keyboard or a small macro pad. The characters are flat color inlays rather than raised or engraved, so plan on an AMS or a manual filament change. Every key has the same single-unit shape with no profile or tilt options, and fit varies between keyboards, so print one test key first. The designer recommends a 0.2 mm nozzle for crisp characters, and you need a free MakerWorld account to generate and download.

What you can make

  • Emoji keycaps

  • Chinese character keycaps

Customizable Keycaps pros

  • Up to nine keys per run, each with its own letter, emoji or symbol in a second color
  • Six fonts cover Latin text, emoji, Chinese characters, two symbol sets and a dingbat font
  • Nearly 30,000 customizations and an average rating of about 4.8 from 31 ratings

Customizable Keycaps cons

  • One character per key and single-unit keys only, so no word legends, spacebars or Shift keys
  • Fit depends on your keyboard: some users found the caps tight, and one scaled them up by about 12% in the slicer
  • A character can drop out of the model; the designer says a page reload fixes it, but some 2026 comments still report missing emoji, and the OpenSCAD file has not changed since May 2025
