3D print generator glossary

Short, plain definitions of the words you run into on generator pages, in slicers and in our guides. Every term has its own link, so you can send someone straight to it.

The tools

No-CAD 3D print generator

A no-CAD 3D print generator is a web or desktop tool that builds a printable STL or 3MF from a form, a photo or a line of text, so you never model anything yourself. You set sizes, type text or upload an image, the tool writes the geometry, and you open the file in a slicer.

Generator vs customizer vs AI generator

Generators, customizers and AI generators are the three kinds of no-CAD 3D printing tools, and they differ in where the shape comes from. A generator makes one kind of object, such as lithophanes. A customizer is one designer's parametric model with settings you can change. An AI generator creates a new mesh from a text prompt or a photo.

Parametric model

A parametric model is a 3D model defined by named values, such as width, wall thickness or text, so changing one value rebuilds the whole shape. Customizers such as the MakerWorld Parametric Model Maker and Thingiverse Customizer run parametric models, mostly written in OpenSCAD, and show each value as a slider, dropdown or text field.

MakerLab

MakerLab is Bambu Lab's collection of no-CAD tools on MakerWorld, where you make a sign, a vase or a lithophane in the browser instead of downloading a finished model. Every tool needs a free MakerWorld account. Bambu Lab's parametric tools are free, the AI tools use credits after a few trial uses, and files are tuned for Bambu Studio.

The files

STL

STL is a 3D printing file format that describes only the outer surface of an object, as a mesh of triangles. The standard format has no place for colors, materials, print settings or units, and most slicers read its numbers as millimeters. It was developed in 1987 for 3D Systems' first stereolithography printers, and every slicer still opens it.

3MF

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a 3D printing file format that packs the mesh together with its units, colors, materials and, often, slicer settings in one ZIP-based file. It is an open standard from the 3MF Consortium, published as ISO/IEC 25422:2025. Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Cura all open it.

STL vs 3MF

The difference between STL and 3MF is how much they carry: an STL holds only the shape, while a 3MF also keeps units, colors, separate parts and slicer settings. Pick 3MF for multicolor prints and anything set up for an AMS. Pick STL when a tool offers nothing else or you want the plainest file; current slicers open both.

OBJ

OBJ is a 3D file format from Wavefront Technologies that stores a mesh as plain text, with optional texture coordinates and surface normals. Colors and textures usually live in separate MTL and image files, so keep them together. Many AI 3D generators export OBJ, and most slicers open it, though the colors may not carry over.

Watertight mesh

A watertight mesh is a 3D model whose surface is fully closed, with no holes, gaps or stray faces, so every edge is shared by exactly two triangles. A slicer needs that closed surface to tell inside from outside. Open meshes slice with missing walls or layers, though most slicers repair small errors automatically.

Printing

Slicer

A slicer is the program that turns a 3D model file into instructions for your printer, usually G-code, by cutting the model into thin layers and planning the nozzle's path through each one. It also adds walls, infill and supports and applies your filament settings. Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Cura are free slicers.

AMS (and CFS, MMU)

An AMS (Automatic Material System) is Bambu Lab's add-on that holds several spools, four in most models, and switches filament mid-print, so one file prints in several colors. Four four-spool units give 16 colors, and newer printers take more. Creality's CFS is similar, and Prusa's MMU3 feeds up to five filaments. Without one, swap filament by hand at a pause.

Filament painting

Filament painting is a way to print a picture as a flat, layered model in which thin, partly see-through layers of different filaments blend into shading. You change filament at set layer heights, by hand or with an AMS. HueForge made the technique popular; MakerLab Chroma Canvas and Kromacut are free alternatives.

Heightmap

A heightmap is a grayscale image in which the brightness of each pixel sets a height, usually with white as high and black as low. Generators use heightmaps to turn photos into reliefs and elevation data into terrain. Lithophanes flip the mapping: dark areas print thick, so they block more light.

Lithophane

A lithophane is a thin print whose thickness varies, so a photo appears in shades of light and dark when you hold it up to a lamp or a window.

Gridfinity

Gridfinity is a modular storage system designed by Zack Freedman in 2022, in which bins and baseplates share a 42 mm grid, so parts from different makers fit together.

Vase mode

Vase mode (Spiral vase in PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, Spiralize Outer Contour in Cura) prints a model as one continuous wall that climbs in a spiral, with a solid bottom and no top or infill.
