What is Chainmail - Customizable Tool?

Chainmail - Customizable Tool is a free MakerWorld customizer that generates sheets of chainmail with every ring already linked, so the print comes off the bed as flexible mail with nothing to assemble. The rings are fixed at 1 mm thick with a 6 mm radius. You choose how many rows, columns and layers you want, and the stacked layers print joined to each other, so the unfolded sheet can be larger than your build plate. That helps on small printers like the A1 mini.

The ready-made print profile is only a small 12 g swatch, so bigger pieces go through the Customize button. Support walls are built into the generated file. Many makers settle on 20 rows, 19 columns and 3 layers per plate, and commenters advise an odd column count because even counts have pushed rings into the supports. For sheets bigger than the form allows, the designer suggests editing the .scad file, and a separate repair link model from the same designer joins panels or replaces broken rings.

Commenters get the best results with regular PLA. Silk PLA tends to come out brittle, and PETG works for some people but not others. Since April 2025 the model has been customized more than 14,700 times. It suits cosplayers and costume makers who want armor panels or a fabric-like print.

What you can make

  • Chainmail sheets
  • Multi-layer sheets that unfold larger than the bed
  • Cosplay armor and costume panels
  • Small chainmail test swatches

How to use Chainmail - Customizable Tool

  1. Open the model on MakerWorld and click Customize
  2. Set the number of rows, columns and layers, keeping the column count odd
  3. Generate the sheet and download the file
  4. Print it, free the rings from the support walls and unfold the layers
  5. Join separate sheets with the designer's link model if you need a bigger piece

Chainmail - Customizable Tool pros

  • Rings print already interlinked, so a sheet needs no assembly
  • Stacked layers come out connected, giving sheets larger than the build plate
  • Support walls are part of the file, and a companion link model repairs broken rings or joins sheets

Chainmail - Customizable Tool cons

  • Ring thickness, radius and weave are fixed, so finer or looser mail is not an option in the form
  • The online customizer throws server errors on big jobs, and users report failures at 5 or more layers
  • A few links can fuse or snap when you free the sheet from the support walls, and silk PLA prints tend to break
