What is GridPilot?

GridPilot is a freemium browser tool that turns a photo of your tools into a Gridfinity tray with a pocket shaped around each one. You lay the tools flat beside a credit card, a US quarter, a ruler or a sheet of A4 paper, take a top-down picture (a QR code sends it from your phone) and click two points on the reference to set the scale. The AI traces the outlines and you pick and name the tools. Sockets, drill bits, taps and dies can also be added by typing their size.

On the layout step you drag and rotate pockets or let auto-arrange group them by type, then add a finger slot, a 6 mm magnet hole or a text label per tool. The tray follows 42 mm Gridfinity units with a stacking lip and optional foot magnets, or takes any custom size, and each pocket depth can be adjusted. The 3MF keeps the tray, pocket floors and labels as separate color parts for multi-material printing, and a DXF is offered for laser or CNC cutting.

Designing and previewing need no account, but downloading needs a free one with a monthly export allowance. It suits anyone who wants an insert shaped around the tools they already own. The service is young and its community is small.

GridPilot pros

  • Pockets follow the real outline of each tool, scaled from one photo with a known reference
  • The whole design and 3D preview work without an account, so you see the tray before signing up
  • 3MF keeps tray, pocket floors and labels as separate color parts, and pockets can get finger slots and 6 mm magnets

GridPilot cons

  • Downloading needs an account, and the free tier caps exports at 100 square inches a month
  • The pricing page lists STL export only on paid plans; the free tier gets 3MF and DXF
  • New service with a very small community and few independent reviews
