A custom STL Download costs $7.99 for one character or $15.98 for a two-character design, and two sample STLs are free. Selling prints: Not allowed Terms of Service section 2.1 limits downloaded 3D models to personal, noncommercial use, bars sharing or reselling them, and says items printed from them may not be sold. The terms also state that the character designs you create belong to Sky Castle Studios.

What is Hero Forge?

Hero Forge is a browser character creator that turns menu choices into a tabletop miniature you can buy as an STL file. You start with a species, then pick clothing, armor, weapons, hair and a pose from long menus, and adjust height, build and facial features with sliders. Designing is free and needs no account, new parts arrive every week, and the release notes list updates into September 2026.

The site mainly sells printed minis, but any design can also be bought as an STL Download. The zipped file comes at 30 mm scale on a 1 inch base, as a mesh of up to 100,000 triangles with no supports. Strength adjustments for miniature scale are applied by default and can be switched off, and a Separate base option splits the base from the figure. Two free sample STLs let you test your printer before you pay. The 3D Digital version is a color file for virtual tabletop apps and is not meant for printing.

It suits D&D and wargame players who want a mini that looks like their own character. A resin printer gets the most out of the fine detail. The files are for personal use only, and extra tools such as kitbashing, which lets you move and scale any part freely, need a paid Pro plan.

How to use Hero Forge

Open heroforge.com and pick a species and body
Choose clothes, gear, hair and a pose from the menus, then tune proportions and the face with sliders
Open Buy, choose STL Download and tick Separate base if you want it
Log in, pay and download the zipped STL from the Digital Downloads page in your account
Add supports in your slicer and print, ideally on a resin printer
