What is Layered Initial and Name Sign?

Layered Initial and Name Sign is a free MakerWorld customizer by JCGil that builds a two-piece decor sign: a large serif capital letter with the name in a cursive font sitting in a pocket on its face. It suits nursery shelves, kids' rooms and birthday gifts, and the model page counts more than 297,000 customizations.

Click Customize (the designer calls it Personalize) and the OpenSCAD model opens in MakerWorld's Parametric Model Maker. You type the name, set the size of the letter and the name, choose Pacifico or one of three Playwrite fonts (or Meddon as an alternative), then shift and tilt the name until it sits well on the initial. A flat-base option trims round letters such as O or S so they stand upright, and a clearance value controls how snugly the insert fits. Version 4.0 added compound names like Emma Rose, with an optional second big initial.

The parts come out on separate plates, so you get a two-color sign by printing each plate in its own filament, with no AMS and no glue for normal assembly. Dots on i and j can end up floating and may need moving, removing or gluing. If you would rather not tweak anything, the designer also publishes ready-made names in four alphabetical sets and takes requests in the comments.

Layered Initial and Name Sign pros

  • Handles compound names, with an optional second big initial
  • Separate plates give a two-color sign without an AMS
  • Every parameter is explained on the model page, and many names also exist ready-made

Layered Initial and Name Sign cons

  • Dots on i and j can float, so you may have to move the name, drop the dots or glue them on
  • The parametric version uses Pacifico, not the Peanut Butter font of the designer's ready-made names
  • Large print: the designer's example profiles use about 117 to 345 g of PLA and 2.5 to 7 hours
