What is Tracemate?
Tracemate is a freemium browser tool that turns a photo of an object into a Gridfinity bin with a pocket shaped like that object. You lay the item on a blank sheet of A4, A5 or US Letter paper and shoot it from straight above. The paper acts as the ruler: once Tracemate finds its four corners, it corrects the camera angle and measures the outline in millimeters, keeping inner holes such as the opening of a wrench.
If the trace is off, you can drag points, delete noise, merge in basic shapes or let the AI magic-wand tool handle shiny or low-contrast parts. Then you set the clearance in 0.1 mm steps, the pocket depth, wall thickness, finger scoops and optional magnet holes. The bin follows the 42 mm grid from 1x1 up to 10x10 units, with a stacking lip, and one photo can hold several objects.
The photo editor needs a free account, and a project uses one download the first time you export its STL; every new account starts with three. The service, from Bartels Software Studio in Estonia, was in beta as of September 2026. It suits anyone with a drawer of hand tools who wants snug holders without drawing them in CAD, and the free baseplate and plain bin generators in its guides work without an account.

Tracemate pros
- A plain sheet of paper sets the scale, so there is no ruler, template or calibration print to deal with
- Fine fit controls on the free plan: clearance in 0.1 mm steps, pocket depth, wall thickness, finger scoops and magnet holes
- Outline detection runs in the browser, and point editing plus an AI magic wand fix difficult traces
Tracemate cons
- Only 3 free STL downloads per account; after that you buy a pack or subscribe
- The photo editor asks you to sign in before it opens, and the service was in beta as of September 2026
- Exports STL only, and the terms allow generated files for personal, non-commercial use only
