What is Vextrude Lithophane Maker?

Vextrude Lithophane Maker is a free browser tool that turns a JPG or PNG photo into a lithophane STL. Vextrude, which also makes 3D text and QR code generators, added it in May 2026. You can load one photo, or up to four that it lays out side by side, stacked, in a strip or in a 2x2 grid. Then you pick one of 22 shapes. Besides flat and curved panels you get hearts, stars, spheres, domes, a two-panel fold that stands by itself, a four-sided photo box and lamp shapes such as a cylinder, a cone, a vase and a lantern with 5 to 12 sides.

Sliders set the width, the thickness range and the resolution. Optional extras include a frame or border, engraved or raised text at the top or bottom, three styles of hanging hole, a base so a flat panel can stand, and an opening for an LED in the lamp shapes. Auto-enhance, brightness, contrast and gamma controls and a background cutout help with weaker photos. The preview switches between a plain print view, a backlit view and a heightmap, and it estimates weight, print time and filament cost.

The mesh is built in your browser and the site says photos are not uploaded. Export is one plain STL, with no color or 3MF option.

How to use Vextrude Lithophane Maker

1. Open the Lithophane Maker and drop in a JPG or PNG, or up to four for a collage
2. Pick a shape and drag the photo in the preview to frame it
3. Set width, thickness and resolution, and add text, a frame, a hole or a stand if you want
4. Check the backlit view, then click Export STL
5. Slice with fine layers and 100% infill and print in white PLA
